David & Layla - A Romantic Comedy

Newroz Films | 06-Jan-08

"Written and produced by Jay Jonroy and based on a true story, David and Layla, is an earnest, frequently funny comedy abot stateless persons and the looming cliches that make Muslims and Jews so wary of each other. Completely accessible and non-threatening tale of the unlikely romance between a quintessential Jewish New Yorker and a lovely Kurdish refugee. Independent production boasts a brand of immigrant chutzpah that highlights the 'anything is possible' side of the American Dream with energy to burn. Shiva Rose (Layla) excels as a self-reliant damsel in distress rooting for." - Lisa Nesselson, Variant

The film, David and Layla, is a romantic comedy directed by Jay Jonroy, Kurdish-American independent director and producer.

The film was inspired by a true story and brings together the traditions, cultures and societal norms of a woman born to a Kurdish-Muslim family, and a man of Jewish-American descent. David and Layla takes place in New York and is about the romantic relationship between two individuals of completely different backgrounds who fall in love, and who are faced with their families' disapproval of the romance. Layla, a Kurdish woman (played by Shiva Rose), who falls in love with David, a Jewish TV producer (played by David Moscow), must choose between what her family approves and what is in her heart. David must also make a similar decision between what is norm and what is love.
