Where I am From

Kurdish American Youth - by Suzan | 28 Apr 05

I am from a book of history
From A thousand sighs and A thousand Revolts.
I am from the mountains
Mysterious, full of the unknown
I am from the oil fields
the heart of all
Whose wild fires never cease
I am from warriors and freedom fighters
From Hasna and Ali.
I am from guerilla fighters and the oppressed
A new day and beginning
I am from the tragic epic of two lovers; Mem u Zin
and the story of 1988; A day never to be forgotten
I am from the five pillars
and I seek refuge in the Lord of daybreak
I am from Kurdistan, a lonesome beauty
and the defiant Haji's,
Sweet honey and Black tea
From the treasure that became hidden to the world by the great grandmother,
The last moments of my uncle's freedom before death called to him.
A mothers picture worth a thousand words
A life that came to an end
A memory forever forgotten
I am from the woman who bore me
Hidden within the depth of the ocean
Risen from darkness and brought into light.
