Find
the Core Members...
The first step is to find a few core people to become members
of KAYO and the local Chapter. These are
people who are willing to become the leaders of something new or
ongoing in the community while
gaining essential skills in leadership, networking, experience
and having some fun at the same time. You
only need a few people at this point, perhaps three to five. Ask
the KAYO Board of Directors if they know
of any youth/students that might be interested or if they will
announce and help organize a meeting
through their various lines of communication with all members.
Talk to fellow students in your local
university or surrounding areas. KAYO chapters have and can be
done through university based
organizations. Example: KAYO-UM (Kurdish American Youth Organization
- University of Michigan)
There are some advantages of having a
chapter based through a University:
Advantages are you are automatically
put through the standards of establishing an organization,
have
greater flexibility to recruit non-Kurds on campus, access
to university funding and facilities.
If you are having trouble getting the core membership
together, then you may want to run a trial activity.
Often the best way to get people interested in your organization
is to expose them ("get a taste of it"?) to
it. A typical first meeting would include a short explanation about
KAYO at large, their past activities,
(especially if there have been events in your local area) and the
developing a local chapter catering more
towards the interests of the youth and the benefits of a local
chapter. Chose something which is easy, fun
and ties into your goals.
